Your breath is one of the most powerful tools you have to support your wellbeing — and it’s always with you.
In reflexology, we work closely with the nervous system, encouraging the body to move from stress into rest and repair. Conscious breathing works in much the same way. By slowing the breath and bringing awareness to it, we gently signal safety to the body, helping tension soften and the mind settle.
Why nasal breathing is so important
Breathing through the nose is the most efficient and calming way to breathe. It naturally slows the breath, reduces stress on the respiratory system, and supports healthy oxygen balance in the body.
The nose filters dust and pathogens, warms and humidifies the air, and allows the diaphragm to work more effectively. This supports relaxation, improves energy levels, and helps regulate the nervous system.
Slow nasal breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s rest, digest and restore mode. This can reduce anxiety, lower stress levels, and create a deep sense of calm.
Breathwork and grounding
Breath awareness naturally supports grounding — the practice of reconnecting with the body and the present moment. Grounding techniques such as feeling your feet on the floor, noticing points of contact with the chair, or gently tuning into your surroundings help stabilise the nervous system.
When combined with slow nasal breathing, grounding becomes even more effective, helping the body feel supported and safe.
A simple breathing practice
Try this gentle breathing rhythm:
- Inhale through the nose for 5
- Hold gently for 5
- Exhale through the nose for 5
- Hold gently for 5
- Repeat for 5 rounds
Afterwards, allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm.
This practice can be used before or after a reflexology session, during moments of stress, or as part of a bedtime routine.
A gentle reminder
Breathwork should always feel comfortable and unforced. If breath-holding doesn’t feel right for you, simply slow the inhale and exhale without holding.
Breathwork and reflexology work beautifully together to support calm, balance and wellbeing — both in the treatment room and in everyday life.
